Dry ice factories have high costs for maintaining dry ice insulation, so Zhi Ming’s favorite pastime is pouring dry ice into the toilet and watching clouds of fog billow up. He finds it absolutely delightful. Recently, Huang Xiaoming and his colleagues appeared on a variety show to promote their work. During the show, Huang Xiaoming also mentioned dry ice. The key point is that the process by which both of them obtain dry ice is exactly the same. According to a journalist’s investigation, at present, the dry ice that citizens may encounter in the catering industry mainly falls into two major areas. Although dry ice offers excellent refrigeration performance, the journalist’s investigation revealed that stores in the city selling ice cream and cakes do not often use dry ice for packaging customers’ orders; instead, they tend to rely on other packaging methods that are less effective.
One method of using dry ice for packaging is to create a smoky effect. Since dry ice has an extremely low temperature, when it sublimates, it rapidly cools the surrounding air, causing the moisture in the air to condense into fog. Therefore, dry ice is often used to produce smoky effects—such smoky displays can be commonly seen in restaurants and karaoke bars in Guangzhou.
The second method of using dry ice for packaging involves employing low-temperature dry ice for refrigeration—this is often found in packaging for items like cakes and ice cream. Additionally, airline meals are also refrigerated using dry ice.
The two main application areas of dry ice are dry-ice refrigeration and dry-ice packing. Dry ice continuously sublimates at room temperature, so any dry ice purchased on a given day must be used up on the same day. Even when stored in a refrigerator, its sublimation rate is hardly slowed down—after all, even the freezer compartment of most refrigerators can only reach temperatures as low as -20°C, which is still far from dry ice’s freezing point of -78.5°C.
