How to Perform Cylinder Inspection

Gas cylinders are used in special applications and operate in complex environments, requiring high levels of safety and reliability. Therefore, ensuring that gas cylinders meet the required standards is extremely important. Typically, we employ various inspection methods to check and supervise whether the safety management of gas cylinders is being properly implemented. There are more than a dozen types of scheduled inspections for gas cylinders.

Gas cylinders are used in special applications and operate in complex environments, requiring high levels of safety and reliability. Therefore, ensuring that gas cylinders meet the required standards is extremely important. Typically, we employ various inspection methods to check and supervise whether the safety management of gas cylinders is being properly implemented. There are more than a dozen types of scheduled inspections for gas cylinders.

The inspection items for steel seamless gas cylinders include visual inspection, acoustic inspection, internal inspection, bottle neck thread examination, weight and volume measurement, hydrostatic pressure test, cylinder valve inspection, and air-tightness test.

Before the inspection begins, each cylinder’s manufacturing mark and inspection mark should be recorded individually (the recorded information includes country of origin, manufacturer’s name and code, factory serial number, month and year of manufacture, nominal working pressure, hydrostatic test pressure, actual volume, actual weight, and date of the last inspection). Once this step is completed, the inspection can officially commence.

Visual inspection Perform a visual inspection of each cylinder to check the outer surface for any signs of dents, pits, cracks, bulges, impacts, scratches, delaminations, wrinkles, corrosion, or thermal damage. If the cylinder body exhibits defects such as cracks, bulges, scars, wrinkles, or delaminations, it must be scrapped.

Audio check: Steel cylinders that have passed the visual inspection must also undergo an acoustic examination. The procedure is as follows: Gently tap the cylinder body with a wooden mallet or a small copper hammer weighing approximately 250 grams. If the resulting sound is crisp and powerful, with a light, lingering resonance that is rhythmic and melodic, then this test is considered合格 (pass).

Bottle neck thread inspection: Visually inspect or use a low-magnification magnifier to check each thread individually for cracks, corrosion, deformation, or other mechanical damage. The threads must be free of crack-like defects; for high-pressure gas cylinders, not more than two teeth of missing thread are permitted. If there is slight corrosion, wear, or other minor damage, the threads can be repaired using taps that comply with the specifications outlined in GB/T10878. After repair, the threads should be inspected using gauges that meet the requirements of GB/8336. If the inspection results fail to meet the standards, the cylinder must be scrapped.
